Tempe, Ariz.– The Wildcats began their first match of the weekend at the Diablo College Tennis Invitational. Arizona advanced to the second round of the winner’s bracket, earning a 4-0 victory against Grand Canyon.
The lead for the Cats began early on as they secured the doubles point. No.49 Gustaf Storm and Alexander Rozin dominated their court 6-3 getting the first win for Arizona of the weekend. No.11 Colton Smith and Jay Friend clinched the doubles point after a strong 6-4 win, putting Arizona at a 1-0 lead going into singles.
No.6 Colton Smith, No.39 Jay Friend, No.76 Gustaf Strom, Herman Hoeyeraal, Nick Lagaev, and Casper Christensen represented Arizona on the courts for singles. Christensen as a quick 6-3, 6-1 victory, extending the lead 2-0. Following not short after, Strom earned another straight-set victory for the Cats 6-1, 6-0. Senior Herman Hoeyeraal followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win, allowing the Wildcats to clinch and obtain a 4-0 win against the Lopes.
The Wildcats will face No.36 Michigan, Saturday, March 2nd at 5:00 PM MST. Arizona is back at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in hopes of advancing to Sunday’s Championship.
