Vols Rack Up Wins on Day Two of Knoxville Showdown


KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Day two of the Knoxville Showdown for the Tennessee men’s tennis team produced eight total victories for the Vols—seven in singles and two more coming on the doubles courts Friday.
 
Tennessee’s primarily faced members of MTSU on day two of the event, opening the day with three doubles matches. The Vols took two of three on the doubles courts, as graduate students Emile Hudd and Boris Kozlov overcame an early break deficit to defeat MTSU’s Pavel Motl/Shu Matsuoka, 6-4. Hudd and Kozlov broke at 5-4 to seal the victory on court two.
 
Court three of doubles saw Tennessee graduate student Tomas Rodriguez and sophomore Gabriele Brancatelli use an early break to earn a 6-3 victory over MTSU’s Ondrej Horak/Marcel Kamrowski.
 
Once singles play got underway in the morning session, the Vols battled for six more victories—a trio of three-setters and three straight-set wins.
 
UT senior #115 Blaise Bicknell won 12 of 17 games after dropping the opening set, taking a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over #61 Francisco Rocha (MTSU) on court one. It marks Bicknell’s second ranked singles win in as many days at the Knoxville Showdown.
 
Sophomore #82 Shunsuke Mitsui, after dropping a first-set tiebreak against MTSU’s Oskar Brostrom Poulsen, delivered a bagel in set two to send the match to a third set. In the third, Mitsui broke Poulsen on deuce point do go up 4-3, en route to an eventual 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-4 victory.
 
On court three, Kozlov narrowly dropped his first set, 5-7, before winning all but six games for the remainder of the match, taking the match over Motl, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Tennessee graduate student and 94th-ranked Kent Hunter logged a convincing 6-4, 6-1 singles win on court five over Ondrej Horak of MTSU.
 
Rodriguez earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over MTSU’s Matsuoka, contiuning to be a reliable force for the Vols. Following Tennessee’s initial six singles matches, Angel Diaz took the court and secured a 6-4, 6-4 win over Columbia’s Theo Winegar to conclude the morning session.
