CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 4 Virginia women’s tennis team (17-3, 9-1 ACC) suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling 4-1 at No. 6 North Carolina (16-3, 9-1 ACC) at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Virginia won the doubles point, but the Tar Heels took four singles courts in straight sets to clinch the match.
The Tar Heels opened the match with a win on the top doubles court, but Virginia countered with sophomore Annabelle Xu and senior Sara Ziodato winning 6-3 on court three. Senior Hibah Shaikh and grad student Natasha Subhash won 6-4 on court two to clinch the point for UVA.
The Tar Heels took over in singles, winning five of six first sets. Subhash was the outlier, taking her first set 6-4 against Carson Tanguilig on four.
North Carolina picked up wins on courts one, two, three and five to clinch the match.
