SAN DIEGO – California women’s tennis senior Hannah Viller Moeller won in the opening rounds of 32 in both singles and doubles on Wednesday in the ITA National Fall Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The Danish veteran paired with freshman Mao Mushika to defeat the 46th-ranked Virginia duo of Melodie Collard and Annabelle Xu, 6-2, 7-6(4) in doubles. In singles, Viller Moeller upset the 18th-ranked Tanya Sasnouskaya of Texas, 6-2, 6-2.
Cal junior Jessica Alsola, ranked 47th, fell in the singles round of 32 to Vanderbilt’s 12th-ranked Celia-Belle Mohr, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, and will move into the consolation draw Thursday.
The ninth-ranked doubles team of Alsola and Katja Wiersholm lost to Virginia’s Natasha Subhash and Hibah Shaikh, 6-2, 4-6, 1-7, and will also move into the consolation bracket.
On day two of fall nationals Thursday, Viller Moeller faces UVa’s Shaikh, who’s ranked 85th, in the singles round of 16 at 9 a.m. PT. Mushika and Viller Moeller play USC’s Grace Piper and Parker Fry at 4 p.m. Thursday in the doubles round of 16.
Thursday in consolation singles round of 16 qualifying, Alsola takes on the 74th-ranked Charlotte Chavatipon of Texas at 11:30 a.m., while in consolation doubles round of 16 qualifying, Alsola and Wiersholm play North Carolina’s 53rd-ranked Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran at 5 p.m.
