SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women’s tennis team competed in the ITA Regionals hosted by New Mexico State with several Utes having a strong showing.
SINGLES
In the main draw, Emma Kamper picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Paula Schaefer from Boise State. She then went on to defeat Louise Wikander from Denver with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 in the Round of 32. She then fell 6-3, 6-3 to Rixt Van Der Werff from Colorado in the Round of 16.
Kaila Barksdale also picked up two wins in the main draw. First, in the Round of 64 Barksdale defeated Kennedy Robinson 6-4, 6-4. She then went on to defeat Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya from Colorado State with scores of 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. In the Round of 16, Barksdale fell short to Colorado’s Betina Tokac with scores of 6-1, 6-2.
Sara Akid made a run to the quarterfinals in the main draw. She started action by defeating Valentina Rodas from Idaho with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1. In the Round of 32, Akid defeated Candice Bernier from UTEP with scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. She then defeated NMSU’s Anna Pinaieva 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Akid battled into three sets with Mila Stanojevic from Colorado. Akid picked up a 6-2 win in the first set but dropped the next two, 6-4, 6-3.
DOUBLES
Kamper and Akid had a first round bye in doubles actions advancing them to the round of 32. They went on to take on Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Hudson Hawkins from Montana State with an 8-2 score. The Utah duo fell in the round of 16 to Anya Nelson and Ema Bubalo from Colorado with a score of 8-6.
