SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah women’s tennis team took on the Indiana Hoosiers, Friday, Feb 17. Utah was able to come away with a 5-2 win for their fourth consecutive win.
The Utes were in complete sync today in doubles with every team besting their opponents, 6-1. On court three, undefeated doubles team Marcela Lopez and Kaila Barksdale beat Hoosiers, Alexandra Staiculesc and Xiaowei “Rose” Hu, first. Second doubles, Katya Townsend and Samantha Horwood, defeated Mila Mejic and Lauren Lemonds, earning Utah the doubles point. Nearly simultaneously, first doubles, Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini, won their match against Lara Schneider and Saby Nihalani.
In fifth singles, Marcela Lopez clinched first against Lemonds, 6-2, 6-1. Earning Utah their third point on court four, Barksdale defeated Staiculesc 6-3, 6-4.
Horwood battled it out against Indiana player Nicole Teodosescu on court six. She was able to make up a three game deficit to eventually win the first set, 7-5. Her opponent matched her with a three game comeback of her own in the second set, but Horwood was still able to come out on top and clinch Utah’s game winning point, 6-4.
Goncharova kept the crowd on the edge of their seats after taking her match against Mejic to the third set. She was able to clinch Utah’s fifth point of the day, 6-2, 6(2)-7(7), 6-2. On court two, Tattini lost to Hoosier, Saby in the third set, 1-6, 6-3, 1-6. In a true nail-biter, Townsend stood her ground against Schneider and was narrowly defeated, 2-6, 7(7)-6(1), 5-7.
