The University of Utah women’s tennis team is headed to Minnesota to take on the Minnesota Gophers and the Memphis Tigers. The Utes will first play the Gophers on Friday, Feb 24 at 1 p.m. and then the Tigers the following day at 11 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah went head-to-head with the Indiana Hoosiers on Friday, Feb 17. The Utes clinched the match, 5-2 starting off with a strong doubles point. First doubles, Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini, second doubles, Katya Townsend and Samantha Horwood, and third doubles, Marcela Lopez and Kaila Barksdale, all won their matches, 6-1.
In singles, Lopez clinched first on court five to continue her undefeated streak, 6-2, 6-1. Following closely behind her, Barksdale won Utah’s third point, 6-3, 6-4. Horwood claimed the Utes game-winning point on court six, 7-5, 6-4. Goncharova battled it out in fourth singles and was able to earn Utah their last point of the day, 6-2, 6(2)-7, 6-2.
ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the most recent ITA poll, Utah women’s tennis was able to come in the top 50 teams in the nation at #36. This is just three spots behind where the Utes started out last spring when they were ranked 33rd.
HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2022-23. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 35-30 overall record. During the 2021-22 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. The team started a program best 9-0, which included wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Pac 12 opponent Washington State.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA
Minnesota is 4-4 this season. They are currently unranked and do not have any ranked players or doubles teams. Utah played Memphis at home in the 2022 season. The Utes came out on top 4-0. This season, the Gophers went up against fellow Pac-12 team, Washington State, on Feb 18. They were defeated, 3-4.
