The University of Utah women’s tennis team is headed down south to take on the Brigham Young Cougars. The Utes will be playing on BYU’s home courts at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah opened up Pac-12 play last weekend against #13 Stanford. The Utes had a strong start in doubles. Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini were able to win on court one, 6-2. Following closely behind them, Katya Townsend and Samantha Horwood clinched the doubles point on court two, 6-4.
Stanford, however, went on to claim the rest of the match, winning every available singles point except on court six. There, Horwood was able to claim another point for Utah, 6-1, 7-5. The Utes ultimately lost the match, 2-5.
ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS
Head coach Ric Mortera has been able to keep the Utes ranked for the second consecutive year. In the most recent ITA poll, Utah women’s tennis was able to come in the top 50 at #44.
HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2022-23. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 41-34 overall record. During the 2021-22 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. The team started a program best 9-0, which included wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Pac 12 opponent Washington State. He helped the Utes sign a top ten recruiting class nationally (No. 9) in 2022 and was named the ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year.
SCOUTING BYU
BYU is 5-3 this season.The cougars are currently unranked and do not have any ranked players or doubles teams. They have taken on two fellow Pac-12 opponents earlier this season. They were able to defeat Washington State, 5-2, but lost to Colorado, 3-4. Last time Utah and BYU went head-to-head was on March 3, 2021 where the Utes were able to come out on top, 4-2

Utah women’s tennis will continue their stint on the road and head to Oregon to take on Portland on Friday, March 17 at 1:30 p.m. and then Oregon the following Sunday at 12 p.m.
