The University of Utah’s women’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Arizona Friday afternoon.
“Obviously a heartbreaking result today as we put ourselves in a position to come out with the win,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “I would have Anastasia 100 times over in that situation and she gave us a chance to win. We certainly aren’t where we want to be as a program yet but I just strongly believe if we keep putting that kind of competitive spirit out there and continue to focus on our development we can truly build something special.”
The Utes started off by getting the doubles point. Samantha Horwood and Katya Townsend defeated Reece Carter and Salma Ziouti 6-4 in the No. 2 spot to start things off strong for Utah. Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova then picked up a 6-4 win over Parker Fry and Kayla Wilkins in the No. 1 spot to claim the doubles point.
Arizona picked up wins in the No. 1, No. 2, No. 6 spots to take a 3-1 lead. Kaila Barksdale was the first Ute to get a singles win and she defeated Wilkins 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
Marcela Lopez picked up a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 win in the No. 5 spot over Fry to tie the overall match score at 3-3.
Clinch point came at the No. 4 spot where Anastasia Goncharova took her match into a three set tie break with Midori Castillio-Meza. Arizona ended up claiming the fourth set with 6-3, 7-6, 7-6 scores. The Wildcats came away with the overall match victory 4-3.
