Utes Advance to Semifinals at the Barb Chandler Classic

BOISE, Idaho – The Utah Women’s tennis team sent two players, Katya Hersh and Samantha Horwood participated in day one of the Barb Chandler Classic, hosted by Boise State. Hersh and Horwood were able to win two of their three total matches to advance to the Semifinals of the Blue Flight.

“Today was a great day of learning for Sam and Katya in these opening matches,” said Coach Ric Mortera. “Katya showed her experience in that singles win and played well down the stretch. I am so excited for Sam to be in that situation again and am confident she will come through. We’ve got some adjustments we need to make both in doubles and singles but looking forward to another day of competition tomorrow.”

Hersh and Horwood opened the day with doubles against Montana state’s Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Mirte Van Baelen. The Utes were able to defeat their opponents, 6-4, before the pair moved on to singles.

Horwood went head-to-head with Garcia-Reboredo and narrowly lost, 3-6, 6(4)-7. Hersh battled it out against Van Baelen to win in the third set, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4, and secure Utah’s spot in the next round.

The Utes will be back on the court tomorrow at the Barb Chandler Classic when they face host Boise State in the mini draws.
