Los Angeles, Calif. – The Utah men’s tennis team began a weekend of play this afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center for a neutral-site match against the San Diego Aztecs. The Utes quickly secured the doubles point and dominated in singles play for a 7-0 sweep.
As the doubles matches began, the Utah men quickly secured the point. On court one, No. 17 ranked duo Patrik Trhac and Berk Bugarikj downed the SDSU tandem 6-4. Soon after, teammates Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman downed Aztecs Alexander Mandma and Bora Sengul 6-3, securing the point for Utah. The match on court three was tied 5-5 but remained unfinished.
The Utah squad started off singles play strong, with No. 37 Espin Busleiman finishing first and racking up another point for Utah after the 6-0, 6-2 match. Utah’s third point came on court three as Francisco Bastias downed his opponent 6-4, 6-0.
The match point was earned on court five, where Mateo Julio battled the first set for a 7-6(7-5) and a 6-2 win in the second. As matches continued to play out, the Utes soon secured their fifth point. This time around, it came on court six when Bruno Krenn defeated SDSU’s Andre Saleh 7-6(7-2), 6-4.
Capalbo also took the upper hand against Chikayo Sato as he lost the first set 6-2 but recovered the second set 6-1 and went on to win the third set 6-2. Finally, on court four Bugarikj took the last win of the day with a three-set match with score 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
UP NEXT
The Utes continue their weekend road trip with another match on Sunday, Feb. 19. The squad will once more play at the LMU Tennis Center, this time facing the LMU Lions. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. MT.
