Utah gets 6-1 win over Washington State on Senior Day

The University of Utah women’s tennis team defeated the Washington State Cougars Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. The Utes won 6-1 in their final home match of the season. 

Utah opened the match strong with doubles. Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez won the first match against Cougar team Yang Lee and Hania Abouelsaad on court three, 6-1. Katya Townsend and Samantha Horwood clinched the doubles point for the Utes on court two, 6-3, against Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom. Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini’s match against 46th ranked Elyse Tse and Eva Alvarez Sande was left unfinished but they were leading 5-2. 

The Utes were able to extend their lead with Barksdale defeating Tse first on court three, 6-1, 6-0. Lopez won court five against Abouelsaad with matching set scores of 6-3. Townsend lost to Alvarez Sande, 6-2, 6-2, giving WSU their first point of the match. Tattini clinched the match on court two against Nakagawa, 7-5, 6-3. Horwood finished closely behind her, beating Stefaniia Mikhailova, 6-3, 6-2. Goncharova downed Kumhom, 7-6(1), 6-1, to close out the match.

Utah Women’s Tennis is headed south to take on the Arizona Wildcats on Friday April 14th at 2:30 p.m. and the Arizona State Sun Devils the following day at 1 p.m.
