ANN ARBOR – The University of Utah women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 5 Michigan Friday morning, 4-0.

Utah had a rough start to the day in doubles. Emma Kamper and Kaila Barksdale were defeated by Wolverine duo Reese Miller and Piper Charney, 6-0. Sara Akid and Kat Lyman were unable to hold off Anna Ross and Lily Jones, losing 6-0 allowing Michigan to win the doubles point. Marcela Lopez and Ana Luiza Cruz’s match was left unfinished at 5-2.
The Utes struggled to gain momentum in singles. Lyman was defeated by Charney in fifth singles 6-0, 6-1. Next to finish was Cruz, losing to Jones 6-1, 6-1 on the sixth court. Yuhan Liu was defeated by Gala Mesochoritou, 6-2, 6-3.
In the No. 1 spot Lopez took her first set to extra games but fell 7-5. She was down 4-3 in the second set before it went unfinished. Kamper was tied 6-6 in her second set before the match was clinched. Barksdale was also battling in her second set as she was tied 5-5 before clinch point.
UP NEXT
Utah will take on either Purdue or Arkansas in the final match of the ITA Kickoff before hosting BYU for a rivalry match at home on Friday, Feb. 9. The Utes will then head to Denver to play on the road Friday, Feb. 16.
