Utah drops decisions to No. 29 Washington

SEATTLE – The University of Utah women’s tennis program faced No. 29 Washington on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Huskies 5-2 on the road. 

“Proud of the team’s fight today,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “They clawed their way back into the match and gave us a pathway to potentially turn the result in our favor. Our seniors have come through in so many situations this year and I would gladly have them in that position again. Overall, we definitely have some things to focus on as we continue to look to improve. Excited for us to get home after the long road trip to recover and get back to training.”

Utah 2, Washington 5

The Utes started off slow in doubles. First to finish was court No. 2, where Kat Lyman and Samantha Horwood fell 6-2 to Washington duo Dariya Detkovskaya and Erika Matsuda. Then, Marcela Lopez and Ana Luiza Cruz were defeated on the first court by Astrid Olsen and Alexia Jacobs 6-2, allowing the Huskies the doubles point.

Yuhan Liu claimed a singles victory for Utah, defeating Olsen 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 3 court. However, unable to fend off Jacobs on the second court was Kaila Barksdale, who fell 6-4, 6-4. On court No. 6, Sara Akid also claimed a Utah victory over Catherine Gagnon, winning 6-3, 7-5.

On the first court Lopez faced Matsuda, who defeated the Ute 6-2, 7-5. Battling hard to send her match to three sets, Lyman fell to Melissa Sakar 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot. Then, Cruz was defeated in…
