San Diego, Calif. – The Utah squad put another win on the record with a 4-1 victory against No. 25 Memphis on the first day of competition at the Ed Collins Spring Classic. This is Utah’s first win against a top-25 team this season.
The squad started with lively doubles play, where all three matches were finished for the result. The Utah men dropped the match on court one 6-3, but Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Busleiman downed the Tiger tandem 6-4 on court two. This left the point to be decided on court three, where Francisco Bastias and Bruno Caula pulled through with a 6-4 win, securing the first point of the match.
As the match moved into singles, the Utes looked to clinch against the Tigers. On court two, Caplbo awarded the team with their second point when he defeated David Stephenson in a swift 6-2, 6-1 match.
The Tigers earned their first and only point of the match when Harry Rock downed Utah’s Patrik Trhac 7-5, 6-3. Soon after, Bastias downed Conor Gannon 7-5, 6-2, securing the third point for the Utes.
The clinching point came on court one, where No.54 Busleiman defeated No. 48 Pablo Alemany 7-5, 6-4. The matches on courts four and six were unfinished.
UP NEXT
The squad will play once again on Saturday, Mar. 18 against Princeton at 11 a.m. MT in the tournament semifinals.
