Utah Continues Action with Denver Match Up


SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah women’s tennis team will take on the Denver Pioneers at home Friday afternoon. The match will be a doubleheader with the men’s tennis team with the men taking on New Mexico at 10:00 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT

Utah last played against the Montana Grizzlies on Feb. 4 after taking on Cincinnati earlier that day and defeating them 4-0. The Utes were able to clinch the doubles point against the Griz with first doubles, Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova winning, 6-4, and third doubles, Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez, claiming victory, 6-0. 

In singles, Samantha Horwood won her match, 6-1, 6-3. Following closely behind her, Lopez clinched her match, 6-1, 6-2. Earning Utah their last point of the day, Goncharova beat her opponent with matching sets of 6-1. All other matches were left unfinished. 

HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA

Ric Mortera is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2022-23. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 35-30 overall record. During the 2021-22 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. The team started a program best 9-0, which included wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Pac 12 opponent Washington State.

SCOUTING DENVER

Denver is 3-1 in their spring season. They are currently unranked. They have one ranked singles player, Taylor Melville. She is currently 56th in the ITA rankings. The Pioneers went up against fellow Pac-12 team, Colorado, on Jan 29. They beat the Buffaloes, 6-1.
