Utah Closes out Opening Weekend with 7-0 Victory

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women’s tennis claimed their third victory of the 2024 season against Idaho State on Sunday afternoon. The Utes beat the Bengals 7-0, logging their third clean sweep during the opening weekend of the season.

“Another positive outing for us,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “I was especially happy with how our seniors paved the way for a successful day today. It was also good to see how we were able to deal with some adversity on certain courts and come out on top. We will enjoy the rest of the day to recover and are looking forward to beginning our preparations for the trip to Ann Arbor [Michigan]  this week.”

Utah 7, Idaho State 0

Utah began the day by securing the doubles point. Ana Luiza Cruz and Marcela Lopez claimed the first doubles win, defeating Bengal duo Lola and Sol O’Lideadha in the No. 1 spot with a 6-0 score.

In  the No. 3 spot, Sara Akid and Kat Lyman partnered up to take down Idaho State’s Hana Cho and Sydney Morris, 6-2, clinching the doubles point for the Utes. Emma Kamper and Yuhan Liu battled hard in the No. 2 spot, but were defeated by Stefanya Shalakhova and Asem Shoybek, 4-6.

Kamper claimed Utah’s first singles victory, defeating Lola O’Lideadha 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot. In the No. 5 spot, Lyman grabbed the next win for the Utes, beating Idaho State’s Shalakhova 6-2, 6-0. 

Kaila Barksdale maintained the momentum in the No. 2 spot, defeating Shoybek 6-3, 6-2, clinching the match victory for Utah. Cruz faced off against the Bengals’ Olivia Mikkelson in the No. 6 spot, claiming the fourth singles victory for…
