USC's Eryn Cayetano Announced As Honda Award Finalist

Women’s Tennis | June 03, 2022

USC All-American Eryn Cayetano is one of four finalists for the Honda Sport Award, the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards (CWSA) executive director Chris Voelz announced on Thursday (June 2). The No. 3 player in the land joins fellow nominees No. 4 Sarah Hamner (South Carolina), No. 2 Emma Navarro (Virginia) and No. 1 Peyton Stearns (Texas) on the ballot.

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 46 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics.” The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2022 Honda Cup which will be presented during the live telecast of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presented by Honda on CBS Sports Network on June 27, at 9 ET/6 PT

In the early goings of what would become her winningest season as a Trojan, Cayetano made a statement in winning the 2021 ITA National Fall Singles Championship, becoming the first Trojan to win the title since 2010 (Maria Sanchez). After a run to the NCAA Singles quarterfinals, Cayetano wrapped up her junior campaign with a 39-11 (.78) singles record and All-American honors. That goes along with the 2022 Pac-12 First Team accolades she received just weeks prior.

Cayetano finished the season ranked No. 3 in the ITA singles rankings and held the top spot from Dec., 2021 through Feb., 2022. She led USC in singles wins with 39 on the year and wrapped up the season as part of two ranked doubles pairings. No. 62 Cayetano and All-American senior Salma Ewing went undefeated in doubles action, posting a record of 6-0 during the spring. Cayetano and Grace Piper finished the season as the No. 69 ranked pairing.

The last USC tennis player to be named a Honda Award finalist was Maria Sanchez in 2011 with Trojan Lindsey Nelson also earning the selection as a nominee in 2006 and 2007. USC great Anna Maria Fernandez was awarded the Honda-Broderick Award in 1981 after helping lead the Trojans to back-to-back national team championships in 1979 and 1980.
