USC Women’s Tennis Overcomes Three-Point Deficit To Beat Cal 4-3

LOS ANGLES – The USC women’s tennis team secured a conference victory over Cal on Sunday, March 26, battling back from a 3-0 deficit to take down the Bears at Marks Stadium.
 
USC struggled early in the match, dropping the doubles point to the Golden Bears. No. 22 Maddy Sieg and Eryn Cayetano secured the lone doubles victory for the Trojans with a 6-0 sweep of No. 15 pairing Jessica Alsola and Katia Wiersholm.

The Trojans’ struggles continued into singles play, where USC lost the first set on five out of six courts. USC fell 0-3 following losses on courts six and two. On court six, Berta Passola Folch defeated Nathalie Rodilosso 6-1, 6-3, and No. 40 Alsola handed No. 83 Snow Han a 6-4, 6-1 loss on court two. 

The Women of Troy were able to battle back, forcing a third set on courts one, three, four and five. No. 5 Sieg picked up the Trojans’ first point on court one, defeating Haley Giavara 7-5, 0-6, 6-3. No. 35 Cayetano scored next for USC, defeating Cal’s Wiersholm 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court three. Emma Charney quickly followed suit, tying the dual at three all with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Valentina Ivanov on court four. Naomi Cheong clinched the dual for the Trojans, defeating Hannah Viller Moeller 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.

With the win over Cal, USC improves to 2-2 in Pac-12 play and 10-6 overall. The Trojans will return to action on Friday, March 31, where they host Utah in the first of a three-game weekend homestand. The match against the Utes will begin at 1:30 p.m.
