USC Women’s Tennis Falls 4-1 to UCLA During Non-Conference Match

Women’s Tennis | March 16, 2023

LOS ANGELES – The USC women’s tennis team struggled to find momentum as the Trojans fell 4-1 in a non-conference match against crosstown rival UCLA Thursday evening at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. The contest was completed after being postponed three times previously due to rain.

Eryn Cayetano picked up the lone singles victory for USC.

In a matchup of top-25 teams, UCLA’s No. 10 ranked duo of Hance/Wagle took the first four games en route to a 6-2 victory against No. 24 Naomi Cheong and Snow Han. USC answered on Court 2, where No. 34 Eryn Cayetano and Madison Sieg held off a comeback attempt by Tian/Catanzarite for a 6-3 win on Court 2. That put all eyes on Court 3, where Ong/Vagramov earned two breaks of serve out of the gate and used them toward a 6-3 deciding victory over Trojans Emma Charney and Nathalie Rodilosso

Five singles first sets went against the Trojans. An unfortunate situation put the Trojans down 0-2 as No. 4 Maddy Sieg was forced to retire on center court. No. 63 Fangran Tian (UCLA) was leading 6-3, 1-0 at the time of the retirement.

No. 39 Eryn Cayetano cut the Trojans’ deficit in half when she completed her 6-2, 6-2 win versus No. 76 Ava Catanzarite on Court 3. No. 95 Kimmi Hance answered for the Bruins, handing No. 61 Snow Han a 6-2, 6-3 defeat on Court 2 to make the score 3-1. The match was decided on court six as Vanessa Ong was able to keep McKenna Koenig at bay, following up her 6-1 first set with a 6-3 second to seal the overall result. Ong is now a winner of four singles matches in a row, with each coming in straight sets.

USC is back in action on Saturday as the Trojans host Dartmouth and Princeton for a doubleheader at Marks Stadium. Matches will be played at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
