SALT LAKE CITY –  The Utah women’s tennis program is slated for two matches this coming weekend, heading to Denver to take on the Pioneers on Friday Feb. 16, then returning home for a match against Colorado State on Sunday Feb. 18.

FIRST SERVE

After a triumphant 4-2 victory over rival BYU last Friday, Utah will kick off the weekend in Colo. with a 1 p.m. match against the Denver Pioneers on Friday Feb. 16. The Utes are then set to host the Colorado State Rams on home courts Sunday Feb. 18. 


LAST TIME OUT

The Utes took down BYU, topping their rivals from down south 4-2 on Friday Feb. 9. Utah fell in doubles, allowing the Cougars the doubles point advantage, but gained momentum in singles. 


Sara Akid collected the first win for the Utes, topping her opponent 6-2, 6-4. Next to finish was Marcela Lopez, who battled hard in the No. 1 spot, but fell to her opponent 6-3, 7-5 giving BYU a 201 lead. 



On the fourth court, Kat Lyman grabbed the next Ute victory to equalize the score to 2-2, winning 6-1, 7-5. Maintaining momentum, Kaila Barksdale defeated her opponent in a tiebreak 6-3, 7-6 (3) and put Utah in the lead, while Yuhan Liu clinched the match victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win on the third court. 



IN THE RANKS

Utah’s Marcela Lopez is ranked No. 59 in the country after posting a 3-1 record so far on the season. In the fall she claimed a runner-up title at the ITA Regionals and made an ITA Championship appearance where she picked up two wins in consolation play. 
 
HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 49-43 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera’s leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Highlights included their inaugural win against…
