CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Tar Heels Carson Tanguilig and Susanna Maltby won the doubles championship at the ITA Carolina Regional on Monday morning, topping Duke’s Elizabeth Coleman and Irina Balus in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, at the Chewning Tennis Center. 

In the process, Tanguilig and Maltby clinched a berth in next month’s NCAA Doubles Championship in Waco, Texas.

Tanguilig and Maltby join Tatum Evans and Theadora Rabman as NCAA qualifiers. Evans and Rabman both qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship with their performance at last month’s ITA All-American Championship.

On Monday, Tanguilig and Maltby won a back-and-forth first set, They dropped a break early and trailed, 3-1, before racing from behind to win, 7-5.

In the second set, Tanguilig and Maltby picked up an early break to go ahead, 2-1. In the next game, the Tar Heels fell behind, 15-40, before coming back to hold serve and take a 3-1 lead. Coleman and Balus responded by holding serve to cut the lead to 3-2, then Maltby’s volley winner on a deuce point in the next game gave the Tar Heels a 4-2 lead.

Tanguilig and Maltby eventually led, 5-2, before the Blue Devil duo roared back to tie it at 5-all. UNC earned another break to win next game without dropping a point, taking a 6-5 lead. Maltby served in the final game to clinch the championship on a deuce point when a Duke ground stroke went long.

Members of the Tar Heel team will have another opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Waco when Carolina hosts the ITA Sectionals November 7-10 in Chapel Hill.
