Harriet Dart has claimed a straight-sets win over Maddison Inglis at the United Cup to extend Great Britain’s lead over Australia
The London-born Dart took 93 minutes to claim a 6-4 6-4 win over Inglis on Ken Rosewall Arena.
Following wins from Cameron Norrie and Katie Swan on the opening day of United Cup play yesterday, it ensures Great Britain’s overall victory in the Group D tie.
Dart, who at world No.98 is ranked 82 places than Inglis, maintained impressive composure before the pro-Australian audience.
She gained the ascendancy in the first set by securing her lone break point opportunity in the fifth game of the first set.
The Australian fought back to level from 1-3 down in the second set but the Brit was ultimately too dominant, with her 17 winners to nine from Inglis a factor in her eventual win.
“Maddy played really great tennis today and I had to really work for it,” said the 26-year-old Dart on court.
“(As the) first match of the year, I was incredibly nervous before coming out here and the crowd were great, so thank you.”
Inglis was elevated to the No.2 women’s position for Australia after Ajla Tomljanovic was forced to withdraw earlier in the day due to a left knee injury.
Jason Kubler now takes on British No.2 Dan Evans in a singles match, before the concludes with a mixed doubles match.
