CARY, N.C. – North Carolina continues to set the pace at the ITA Women’s All-American Championship this week from Cary Tennis Park. The Tar Heels have four in the Main Draw Singles Round of 16, while one doubles pair advanced in the main draw as well.
With no other program able to boast having more than two players remaining in the singles main draw, UNC makes up a quarter of the players still competing for one of the biggest trophies in collegiate tennis.
No. 21 Fiona Crawley nearly blanked her opponent Wednesday morning in a 6-1, 6-0, rout of No. 102 Laia Conde Monfort of Tulsa. Next up for Crawley is a battle with top seed Sarah Hamner from South Carolina in what will be the marquee matchup in the Round of 16.
No. 15 Abbey Forbes made if four wins in Cary this week with an impressive 6-4, 6-2, victory over sixth seed Carson Branstine of Texas A&M. She will face NC State’s No. 23 Abigail Rencheli on Thursday.
No. 28 Carson Tanguilig was the third Tar Heel to win in the morning wave by earning a 6-3, 6-3, win over No. 65 Snow Han of Southern California. The UNC sophomore will tangle with third seed Chloe Beck of Duke in the Round of 16.
Anika Yarlagadda, the only unranked player remaining in the field, dropped the opening set, but made a thrilling comeback to post a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, win over No. 52 Emmanuela Antonaki of Mississippi State. Yarlagadda will see second seed Daria Frayman of Princeton on Thursday.
#31 Forbes and Elizabeth /Scotty defeated No. 24 Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff of Ohio State in the opening round of main draw doubles.
They will take on fourth seed Maria Olivia Castedo and Page Freeman of Notre Dame in the Round of 16.
