CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Two singles players and two doubles teams out of the Atlantic Coast Conference have reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Individual Singles and Doubles Championships held this week, November 19-24, at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The quarterfinals of both the singles and doubles championships are slated for Friday, November 22, with the semifinals on Saturday, November 23, and the championship matches set for Sunday, November 24.
This is the first year of a two-year plan for the singles and doubles championships to be conducted in the fall, with the team championships continuing to be held in the spring.
In singles play, the ACC is guaranteed at least one semifinalist as Corey Craig of Florida State will take on Dhakshineswar Suresh of Wake Forest in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Craig reached the quarterfinals with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Oscar Lacides of Oklahoma in the Round of 64, before cruising to a 6-2,6-2 straight-set win over Emon Van Loben Sels of UCLA in the Round of 32. On Thursday, November 21, Craig once again battled back from a first-set loss to defeat Paul Inchauspe of Princeton in the Round of 16 to stay alive in the singles bracket.
Suresh posted back-to-back straight set wins, winning 6-4, 6-1 over Miguel Perez Pena of Georgia in the Round of 64 and 6-4, 6-2 against Devn Badenhorst of Baylor in the Round of 32 to move on to the Round of 16. There, Suresh fought back from behind following a 4-6 first-set loss to take the second set on a tiebreaker 7-6 (3) and the third set 6-3 to move on to the quarterfinals.
Like in the singles championship, the ACC is certain to have a semifinalist in the doubles championship with the Wake Forest team of Luciano Tacchi and Luca Pow reaching the quarterfinals to face off with the Florida State duo of Youcef Rihane and Alex Bulte on Friday.
The No. 4 overall seed Tacchi and Pow scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over the team of Arthus de la Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi of Rice in the Round of 32 before holding off the pair of Facundo Yunis and Jip van Assendelft…
