Tverijonaite Falls in Opening Round at NCAA Singles Championships

Waco, Texas. In the round of 64 at the NCAA Singles Championships, Emilija Tverijonaite’s fall season came to an end Tuesday afternoon in Waco, Texas after falling in straight sets 5-7, 2-6 against Virginia Elaine Chervinsky.

Tverijonaite became the first Sun Devil singles qualifier to make the NCAA singles tournament since Ilze Hattingh qualified in 2021, making the round of 32. The Sophomore went 12-2 this fall and went undefeated in three-set matches going 3-0.

The Lithuanian also won a singles title at the USTA Intercollegiate championships in San Diego in September and qualified for the singles championships at the ITA Southwest Championships with a third-place finish.

The sophomore fell in a back-and-forth opening set, returning from a 0-2 deficit and taking a 5-2 lead, but Chervinsky came back and won the first set 5-7. In the second set, Chervinsky won an early break point and Tverijonaite was unable to bounce back, falling 2-6.

The Sun Devils will look ahead to their Spring season under first-year head coach Jamea Jackson which will commence in January.
