Trio of Vols Earn Bids to NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Three members of the Tennessee men’s tennis team have earned bids to the 2023 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.

Junior Johannus Monday and graduate student Emile Hudd secured their spots in the singles bracket, with Monday and graduate student Pat Harper slated to compete in the doubles draw.

The Singles and Doubles Championships will run May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs May 18-20.

The Championships will consist of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams and will be hosted by the University of Central Florida and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission.

Monday, the SEC Player of the Year, was named one of 12 automatic qualifiers for the event, earned the No. 5 overall seed in the singles draw. Monday logged an impressive 17-3 record in singles play this spring and was ranked as high as No. 2 in the ITA’s national singles rankings.

Fellow first-team All-SEC selection, Emile Hudd, garnered an at-large bid for the singles tournament. Hudd logged an 17-8 dual singles record this year and was 11-3 at the No. 2 singles lineup position.

On the doubles courts, Monday and Harper have logged a 15-3 record as a pairing this year, and rose to a season-best ITA national doubles ranking of No. 2 during the dual season. The UT duo holds the designation of one of four pairings in the “seeds 5-8” section of the draw.

All matches will be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.

The Knoxville Regional of the NCAA Tournament is set to begin this weekend, with Tennessee taking on Belmont Saturday, May 6 at 1 p.m. ET. With a win Saturday, Tennessee would advance to the second round of the tournament, facing the winner of Saturday’s Wake Forest vs. Memphis match Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
