Trio of Gators Set to Represent Florida at NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships are slated to begin on Monday, May 23 with McCartney Kessler representing UF in singles action while Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein will open doubles competition on Tuesday, May 24 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Ill.
 
Currently the No. 12 player in the nation, Kessler earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Singles Championship and will kick-off her competition at 4 p.m. ET against No. 45 Solymar Colling of San Diego. Doubles action is scheduled to get started for Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein on Tuesday, May 24 as the UF pair battles No. 36 Ava Hraster and Kylie Bilchev of Georgia Tech. First serve time has yet to be announced.
 
The singles and doubles competition, which consists of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams, will be conducted May 23-28.
 
Kessler, on her way to being named the 2022 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, has been dominant this season. In addition to earning First Team All-SEC honors, Kessler recorded the best singles record for UF at 20-7 (18-5 in dual matches; 12-1 in SEC), winning 13-straight singles victories from Feb. 12-Apr. 8, along with a team-best 13 ranked-victories. She claimed two top-10 singles victories as well.
 
On the doubles side, Briggs and Zein are currently ranked No. 23 and collected a 15-8 mark during the season, including a 6-5 record in dual matches. Against ranked-opponents, the duo is 3-3, with a highest-victory against No. 11 Zaar/Flores of Pepperdine, 6-4.
 
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship was awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applied the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have had a minimum of 13 started singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
 
Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championship was awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams.
