CHAMPAIGN, Ill., – In his debut match representing Mississippi State, freshman Radomir Tomic did not disappoint.
Tomic took down Jeremy Zhang of Australia 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round of qualifying at the Champaign 15K on Monday, defeating the freshman at the University of Illinois on his home court.
Tomic, a native of Zvornik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, advances to take on Russian Semen Pankin on Tuesday at approximately 12 p.m. for a shot to move on to the singles main draw at the event.
The Bulldogs’ other two competitors came up short in their first-round bids on Monday. Sophomore Benito Sanchez Martinez fell to American Perry Gregg, a junior at Holy Cross, 6-2, 6-3. No. 68 Petar Jovanovic also dropped his match to Pankin, losing a pair of tiebreakers 7-6(5), 7-6(4).
