INDIAN WELLS, C.A. – The Tigers conclude their first tournament under head coach Boomer Saia in his inaugural season at the team’s helm. Many Tigers succeeded in their duels against Kansas, Arkansas, and Iowa St.
On the last day of matchups, three Tiger duo teams won in doubles, and four Tigers succeeded in singles.
“Great finish today – we came out in doubles, set the tone, and carried that into our singles,” Saia says. “If we continue to grow in big moments, we can do special things this year.”
In doubles, Jenna Thompson and Eleni Louka defeated Anna Supapitch Kuearum and Isabella Dunlap 6-4. Cristina Mayorova and Leigh Van Zyl easily beat Ashlee Nasker and Juliette Nask 6-2. Lastly, Sophia Hatton and Alina Tsyurpalevych beat Valeska San Martin and Gala Arangio 6-4.
In singles, freshman Tsyurpalevych obtained her first loss to Kuearum 6-0, 6-2. Louka additionally fell to Nask 6-4, 6-4 after fighting hard. The only other loss on the day came from Mayorova, who fell to Nasker in a tough 6-4, 6-4 loss. Finishing strong, Hatton defeated Arangio in an easy 6-1, 6-4. Thompson tacked on another win by swiftly defeating Dunlap 6-3, 6-1. Alex Anttila rounded out the group with our final win in the tournament, beating San Martin 6-3, 6-4. Lastly, Van Zyl defeated Caroline Nichols in a swift 6-4, 6-4 battle.
The Tigers look forward to their home season opener against ETSU on Friday, January 19, at Duckworth Family Tennis Center at 5 PM.
