MALIBU, Calif. – The Clemson women’s tennis team (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday at the hands of No. 9 Pepperdine (1-0) by a final score of 4-0. The Tigers will play the loser of this afternoon’s match between Memphis and Columbia tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out their ITA Kickoff Weekend.
“We knew today was going to be a tough battle, but our goal was to embrace the challenge and compete with confidence,” said Head Coach Amy Sargeant. “We had some good chances at all spots in doubles, and Jenna and Sam gave a dominating performance at 2.”
“Pepperdine is a great team and are solid up and down the line. We had chances in all spots with deuce points, and couldn’t quite capitalise on them on our terms. Sophia got off to a great start taking the first set on court 6, giving us a little momentum. I’m proud of how our girls competed && look forward to another opportunity to grow tomorrow!!”
Jenna Thompson and Samantha Buyckx put on a brilliant performance in doubles, winning Court 2 6-1, but it was not enough, as Pepperdine won the other two matches to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Sophia Hatton won the first set on Court 5, but the match would not be played to its conclusion. The Waves were able to close out straight-set victories on Courts 1, 2 and 3 to clinch the match, 4-0.
Clemson will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out its trip to Malibu against either Memphis or Columbia, pending Saturday afternoon’s result.
