LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Clemson men’s tennis team got off to a great start on day one of the Liberty Hidden Dual, winning all three doubles matches and securing victories on three singles courts.
“I am really proud of the boys tonight,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “They competed well, controlled their emotions beautifully and stuck to their process throughout. It was a great battle with a tough Liberty team. It was great to see Nini back on court playing after being out for two full years. Now we have a quick turnaround as we play Old Dominion at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. I’m excited to see the boys get back to work and continue getting better.”
Spencer Whitaker/Max Smith put on a great showing to start out doubles, defeating Wilson/Worst 6-4 on Court 1. Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Nina Dica kept it rolling and fought to a 7-6 win on Court 2 before Matt Pitts and Trey Stinchcomb clawed their way to another 7-6 win for a clean sweep.
M. Pitts started the Tigers off strong with a 7-5, 6-2 win on Court 5 while Smith fought his way back from behind on Court 3, registering a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. Plans Gonzalez impressed from Court 1, taking down Liberty’s Wilson in a three set battle, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
Whitaker, Dica and Stinchomb battled but were unable to record the win on Courts 2, 4 and 6, respectively. Silva and T. Pitts also saw time for the Tigers.
