TEMPE, Ariz. – For a 35th consecutive season, head coach Sheila McInerney has guided the Sun Devil Women’s Tennis team to the NCAA Tournament, as they will open with Wake Forest on Friday, May 5 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Should they advance, the Sun Devils will meet the winner of host No. 15 Tennessee and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday, May 6.
McInerney has led the Sun Devils to the postseason in every spring since 1987 (excluding 2020, which was cut short due to COVID-19) and has reached the NCAA Tournament 37 times in her 39-year tenure.
In their last time out, the Sun Devils were bested in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Championships by No. 6/28 USC, 4-1, on April 27 in Ojai, California. It snapped a streak of two consecutive seasons of advancing to the semis or better in the conference tournament.
Prior to Ojai, the Sun Devils had caught fire to close out the regular season. Winners of five straight, they dispatched five conference opponents who were all ranked within the top-55 of the ITA team rankings – No. 29 USC, No. 26 UCLA, No. 54 Colorado, No. 48 Utah and No. 48 Arizona.
The final three victories came via 4-0 sweep, as they outscored opponents 20-3 across the winning streak.
In sweeping the Utes on April 15 in Tempe, the Sun Devils solidified an undefeated home schedule for the first time in program history, acing all 15 matches played at the Whiteman Tennis Center this spring.
