Three Wolverines Reach Semis, but Runs End at B1G Singles and Doubles Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan men’s tennis sophomore Patorn Hanchaikul and the doubles team of Bjorn Swenson and Will Cooksey reached the semifinals of the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championship, but their runs went no further in the four-day event hosted Friday through Monday (Nov. 4-7) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Hanchaikul defeated his first two opponents — Reece Yakubov (Ohio State) and Mihailo Popovic (Wisconsin) — in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinal for a matchup with Presley Thieneman (Northwestern). It was a battle from start to finish, as Thieneman took the first set 7-5 before Hanchaikul rallied to take the second set 7-6 (1). In the deciding match, Hanchaikul did it again, grabbing a 7-6 (4) win in the tiebreaker to advance to the semifinals. His round came to an end at the hands of Northwestern’s Ivan Yatsuk, who earlier in the day ended Swenson’s play in the quarterfinals. Yatsuk went on to capture the Big Ten Singles title.

Swenson and Cooksey were doubles semifinalists, topping Michigan State’s Graydon Lair and Kazuki Matsuno 8-3, and Wisconsin’s Robin Parts and Sebastian Vile 8-7 (5) to advance to the semifinal. Indiana’a Michael Andre and Ilya Tiraspolsky took the semifinal match 8-4 to spoil the run.

This event ended Michigan’s fall slate as it now looks ahead to the dual season. The Wooverines’ next competition is slated for Jan. 15 against Boston University and will kick off a six-match homestand at the VTC.
