Three Tigers Earn Comeback Wins in Sweep Over Georgia Southern – Clemson Tigers Official Athletics Site

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team (6-1) earned a convincing 7-0 sweep over Georgia Southern (0-1) on Friday at Duckworth Family Tennis Facility. Three separate Tigers battled from first set defeats to win their matches in supersets. It was the team’s fifth-straight home sweep to start the 2023 season.

“This win was so important for us. To follow up an emotional win from last week was gritty,” said Head Coach Amy Sargeant. “The tennis wasn’t where we needed it to be, but we were willing to find a way and the championship mindset was where we wanted it to be. We are continuing to build on our strengths and learn from each opportunity we get. This was another culture win for team 48.”

Clemson earned the doubles point with victories on Courts 2 and 3. Dani Medvedeva and Sophia Hatton advanced to 6-1 on the season as a doubles pair with a 6-2 victory.

Cristina Mayorova continued her dominance, making quick work of her opponent in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. She advanced to 6-1 in singles on the season and 2-0 from Court 1. Leigh Van Zyl fought hard for a straight-set victory with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) scoreline. Medvedeva won her match in straight sets as well, 6-4, 6-2.

Hatton earned an impressive comeback victory, winning the second and third sets 6-2, 11-9, respectively. Alexandra Anttila pulled off a comeback of her own in a 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 win, while Jenna Thompson battled in a superset to cap off the team sweep with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 triumph.

The Tigers will return to action with a home doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 11 against Elon and App State. Clemson will battle Elon at 11 a.m. and App State at 3 p.m.
