NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Rutgers women’s tennis team finished an impressive weekend of play, wrapping up action at Yale’s Bulldog Invitational on Sunday. The Scarlet Knights tacked on eight more wins on the final day of the tournament, two in doubles play and six more in singles. Overall RU left New Haven with 22 totals wins, 15 of them coming in singles play.
“I always enjoy starting off the season at this invite with strong opponents,” head coach Hilary Ritchie said after the final match of the weekend. “The team demonstrated a great deal of toughness and tactical awareness. We will continue to work on doubles positioning and capitalizing when we are ahead.”
Doubles
Two pairs of Scarlet Knights came away with doubles victories against BU.
The duos of Zuzanna Frankowska/Jackie Lopez and Naomi Karki/Cindy Zhou each won their doubles match by a score of 7-5, respectively.
Lopez and Zhou earned victories on the doubles court all three days, the first two with each other.
Singles
RU Had their best singles day of the weekend on Sunday, taking six out of eight contests.
Mai Nguyen dropped her first set 4-6, but came storming all the way back winning 7-6 (5) in the second set and 11-9 in the super tiebreak.
Zeynep Ilker had a strong performance winning the first set 6-2 and the super tiebreak 10-3. Ilker recorded three singles victories for a flawless weekend.
Karina Jumazhanova beat her Terrier opponent (6-4, 7-6 (5)). Frankowska swept her match as well, winning in back-to-back sets by the score of 7-5.
Zhou and Karki dominated in their matches with straight set wins. Zhou came out on top with a 6-2, 6-0 win while Karki also won handily, 6-2, 6-1.
