PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rutgers women’s tennis team came out on top in the Brown Invite defeating host school Brown Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights collected eight wins, including three doubles and five singles, to earn the finals victory.
“The whole team showed a great deal of mental and physical toughness this weekend,” head coach Hilary Ritchie said. “They played confidently and stepped up on critical points. They showed real progress and growth.”
Doubles
In their first doubles match of the season together, Mai Nguyen and Cindy Zou beat Ali Maguy and Lindsey Hofflander, 6-3.
Naomi Karki and Karina Jumazhanova also got paired up for the first time this season on Sunday. They recorded a 6-3 win over Bella Hu and Hannah Shen.
Minchae Kim and Zuzanna Frankowska continued to find success together, shutting out Anne Moody and Anne Yang, 6-0. They have played all but one doubles match together this fall.
Singles
Kim’s match against Gabby Soliman went down to the wire. She won the first set 6-1, dropped the second set 5-7 but came out on top in the super tie-break, 11-9, to take the match.
Jackie Lopez battled against Bella Hu, beating her in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7.
Zeynep Ilker recorded her second win of the year against Brown’s Lindsey Hofflander. Ilker defeated her at the Bulldog Invitational in September, and had her number once again. She edged Hofflander Sunday, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-7.
Frankowska extended her team lead in singles wins to eight, with her win on Sunday, with a straight-sets win over Dani Ben-Abraham, 6-4, 6-1.
Karki shutout Anne Moody in the first set, before winning 7-5 clinch the win.
