SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – University of Missouri tennis made a late singles run but ended up on the wrong end of a 4-0 decision to No. 12 Auburn on Sunday in Southeastern Conference action at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri.
Four of the six singles matches went to a third set with Mizzou leading or tied in all three unfinished matches.
Auburn started off with the doubles point, featuring winning scores of 6-4 at No. 2 and 6-3 at No. 3. The No. 1 match was unfinished with the 26th-ranked pairing of Carolyn Ansari and Ariana Arsenault leading 5-2 over Mae Canete and Inah Canaete.
The other Tigers struck quickly in singles with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 6 to move on the cusp of clinching the match. Mizzou fought back, as Inah Canete picked up a 7-5 win in the first set over Kaitlyn Carnicella in the third slot and Romary Cardenas Rifka took the first frame by a 6-3 margin in the fifth spot. Both matches went to a third set and were unfinished.
No. 1 singles was a see-saw battle between Mae Canete and 36th-ranked Ansari which saw a first-set tiebreaker in favor of Auburn and a 6-4 win by Canete in the second set.
Andrea Artimedi dropped her first set 6-2, won her second 6-1 and lost the third, 6-2, in the eventual match decider at No. 4 singles.
Matches were unfinished at No. 1 singles, No. 3 singles and no. 5 singles. Mizzou led at 1 and 3 and 5 was tied at four games apiece.
