NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Rutgers women’s tennis team wrapped up day one at the Bulldog Invitational in New Haven, Connecticut, on Friday evening. The Scarlet Knights faced the host, Yale, earning the doubles point before splitting the eight singles matches.
Senior Minchae Kim and freshman transfer Cindy Zhou led the way with two wins each.
Doubles
Four pairs of Scarlet Knights took the courts in doubles, winning three and taking the early 1-0 lead.
Mai Nguyen and newcomer Zuzanna Frankowska earned a 6-2 win in their first match of the year.
Another new duo in Kim and rookie Karina Jumazhanova clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.
Jackie Lopez and Zhou added the third doubles victory for Rutgers, winning 7-6 (5).
Singles
Four Scarlet Knights came away with a singles win including Kim, Zhou, Naomi Karki, and Zeynep Ilker.
Kim dropped the first set of her match, 6-2, before coming all the way back to come out on top in the second set (6-4) and the third set super tiebreak (10-6).
Karki jumped out early, winning the first set 6-3 and eventually clinching the match with a 10-7 victory in the third set super tiebreak.
Zhou won her second match of the day this time in two sets, while Ilker also swept with a straight sets win.
