Tennis Closes Penn Invitational With 12 Total Wins

PHILADELPHIA — University of Missouri Tennis wraps up competition at the Penn Invitational at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday, September 15.

Mizzou opened the final day of the invitational with doubles matches against Syracuse, ending the weekend with singles play facing off against Delaware. The Tigers collected one final victory on day three of competition, totaling to five doubles and seven singles wins for the Black and Gold.

The senior-freshman duo, Inah Canete and Korina Roso, battled in doubles action against the Syracuse pair, Kimoto and Sysoeva, in the No. 1 slot, falling to The Orange, 8-6. Graduate student Lailaa Bashir and freshman Gian Octa faced off against the Syracuse duo of Knezkova and Levivier, dropping to The Orange 8-5.

To close out the afternoon, Bashir seized a singles victory against The Hens in the No. 3 slot, defeating Can in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. Canete also saw singles action against Delaware on the No. 1 court, falling to Hrynashka in a three-set match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

HEAD COACH BIANCA TURATI

“Good level of doubles today even if we came up just a little short with the scores. Then in singles, the team was tired and suffered fatigue after three long days. It just means that after a few days off to recover, we’ll need to work even harder on the court and in the gym. Congrats to Lailaa on her win in singles! It was my first chance to watch three of our incomers compete. Now we have a better idea of what we need to work on more specifically. Overall, a lot of positive takeaways from this first trip!”

The Tigers will continue their fall season at the ITA Regional Championships in Memphis, Tennessee, on Oct. 9-14.
