PHILADELPHIA— University of Missouri tennis rounds out day two of competition at the Penn Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers on Saturday, September 14.
The Black and Gold began the contest with singles and doubles matches against Penn, closing the day with singles matches against Syracuse and St. Joseph. The Tigers captured five wins for the day, adding up to 11 team victories for the weekend.
The graduate student and freshman duo, Lailaa Bashir and Gian Octa, grabbed an early 8-4 doubles triumph in the No. 2 spot against Pennsylvania’s Tkachenko and Stojanovski during the morning’s matches. Both Tigers also seized singles victories against St. Joseph in the afternoon with Bashir defeating Tracey in the No. 3 slot, 6-2, 6-3. Taking her match to three sets, Octa seized a hard-fought singles match against Tang in the No. 4 spot, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7. Octa also grabbed a singles win over Penn’s Stojanovski 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
On the No. 1 court, senior Inah Canete secured a 7-5, 6-4 singles victory against Syracuse’s Kimoto, who currently is ranked No. 24 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings.
