THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis player Andres Martin is ranked No. 20 in the ITAS Preseason Ranking released on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Marcus McDaniel has also claimed a spot on the singles ranking list, coming in at No. 97. Martin and McDaniel have earned an impressive ranking of No. 17 in the ITA Doubles Preseason Ranking. At the end of the 2021-22 season, Martin was ranked at No. 37. As a doubles pairing, Martin and McDaniel finished last season at No. 38.
Both players represented Tech in the singles and doubles competition at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships. Martin advanced to the second round of singles for the second consecutive season. As a duo, Martin and McDaniel concluded their season after an early loss in the doubles bracket.
Both athletes earned several accolades after their consistent success during the spring. Martin earned First Team All-ACC honors and McDaniel was named to the All-ACC Second Team. During conference play, the two were one of the ACC’s most formidable doubles team that gained a win over top 10-ranked pairings from Virginia Tech and Auburn. Both players also earned All-ACC Academic honors.
The Tech standouts’ success throughout the 2021-22 season earned them spots in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Regional Rankings. In the doubles rankings, Martin and McDaniel finished No. 2 in the southeast region. Martin earned a No. 4 and McDaniel earned a No. 17 singles player regional ranking. The team was ranked No. 5 in the southeast region.
Following the spring season, Martin competed at the Atlanta Open. He received a wild card entry into the main draw and competed during “College Night.” Martin dominated in the first round, defeating No. 69 Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets. He concluded his run in the tournament after a hard-fought match against No. 78 Adrian Mannarino.
The Jackets will begin their fall season at the ITA Men’s All-Americans Championships on Saturday, Oct. 2 in Tulsa, Okla.
