Tech eyes final homestand of the season


BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech plays its final matches of the regular season taking on No. 65 Georgia Tech and No. 62 Clemson this weekend.

HOMESTRETCH
The Hokies are set to play their final regular season matches this weekend holding Senior Day on Sunday against Clemson. Tech will honor both Alvaro Saez-Royeula Ariza and Jordan Chrysostom with the ceremony set to start at 12:30. Alberto Orso and Scott Sculley claimed the lone wins for Tech over the weekend after dropping both matches to No. 22 NC State and No. 19 Wake Forest. Chrysostom and Ryan Fishback picked up a doubles win and were ahead in the Wake Forest match before it was called. The Hokies are currently 6-7 at home this season and look to rise in the ACC standings from the 11 spot before the ACC Championships.

YELLOW JACKETS

Georgia Tech heads into competition after going 1-1 in its last weekend at home. The Jackets were narrowly defeated by Louisville, 3-4, but responded on Sunday with a dominating 4-0 win over Notre Dame. The top performers for the Jackets were No. 9 Andres Martin and No. 79 Keshav Chopra going 2-0 in singles and doubles play. The duo’s doubles victory on Sunday aided the Yellow Jackets in gaining a 1-0 advantage over Notre Dame. Martin continues to the be the standout for Tech in singles competition. He is 19-4 in dual match play and is currently on an eight-match winning streak. The junior has also defeated an impressive 13 matches against nationally-ranked players.

TIGERS

Clemson enters this weekends matchup sitting just below Tech in the ACC standings at 12th. The Tigers dropped both of their matches this past week losing 4-3 to Notre Dame and 4-2 to Louisville. Junior’s Ryuhei Azuma and Jorge Plans Gonzalez earned ranked wins in the loss against Louisville. Azuma defeated No. 72 Rodrigues on Court 1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win right before Plans Gonzalez registered his highest ranked win of the season on Court 2 against No. 26 Donnet, winning 7-5, 6-2.
