Tar Heels To Face Texas In NCAA Quarterfinals


Who: No. 1 North Carolina (32-1) vs. No. 8 Texas (21-4)

Where: USTA Campus – Orlando, Fla.

When: Friday, May 12, 2023 – 5 p.m. 


The Lead: After a win over No. 16 Florida in the Super Regional round, the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels will face the No. 8 Texas Longhorns in the NCAA Quarterfinals at the United States Tennis Association’s national campus in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday, May 17 at 5 p.m. The winner between the Tar heels and Longhorns will advance to the NCAA Semifinals on Friday, May 19.

 

Storylines:

  • With a win over Florida in the Super Regional round, UNC posted a perfect 18-0 record at home this season. 18 wins at home is a new program record.

  • UNC has made it to the Elite 8 for the 12th time in program history, all coming after 2002.

  • With a win over Texas, North Carolina would capture its 33rd victory of the season. 33 wins is a single season program record that has only been eclipsed twice  (2017, 2019).

  • Last week, Fiona Crawley won her 118th singles match as a Tar Heel. She is now in sole possession of eighth place in all-time singles victories at UNC and is now one win shy of tying Jenna Long for seventh place all-time. 


From the Notes: Last season, in the NCAA Tournament, the Longhorns defeated the Tar Heels 4-2 in the NCAA Semifinals.


Switching Sides:

  • With their 4-3 victory over No. 9 Pepperdine on Saturday at the NCAA Austin Super Regional, the Longhorns earned their third straight and 13th all-time  appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.

  • Texas is seeking to claim its third straight and 10th all-time appearance in the NCAA semifinals with a win over North Carolina on Wednesday.

  • The Longhorns have posted a 67-33 (.670) all-time record in NCAA Tournament play. Texas has captured NCAA team titles in 1993, 1995, 2021 and 2022.
