Iga Swiatek is proud of her 36-match winning streak, and the fact that at 21 she is a multiple Grand Slam winner and the first player from Poland to ever win a major singles title. But when people try to compare her to legends like the Williams sisters she is quick to remind them that she isn’t even in their league.
Asked about the subject after winning her 36th consecutive match on Tuesday at Wimbledon, due to the fact that her current streak has eclipsed the previous best streaks of both Serena and Venus Williams, Swiatek gave her thoughts.
“Still when I see Serena or see Venus, they seem like, I don’t know, the legends,” she said. “I don’t consider myself a legend. They seem like the ones, they’re the greatest of all time in tennis.”
That said, Swiatek is thrilled to have a chance to match the longest streak since 1990 when she takes the court in the second round against Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in the second round.
“It’s amazing for me to have that kind of streak,” she said. “It just shows how much work we’ve been putting for every match. I’m pretty happy that I could show consistency because it was always my goal. I didn’t know that it was going to be possible for me to show that much consistency, and actually to win tournaments. But I’m just really happy and I’m trying to use it the best way possible.”
