Svajda Earns NCAA Championships Spot At ITA Sectionals

FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) — SMU Men’s Tennis sophomore Trevor Svajda earned a spot in the NCAA Individual Championships after making the semifinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Sectional Championships, Saturday.

“Great weekend for Trevor. He’s been playing high level and has really shown it in each and every match,” said Head Coach Grant Chen. “Was proud to see how he handled all the variables with challenging weather, competing both indoors and outdoors. He has earned his spot in the first fall NCAA singles championships in two weeks.”

Svajda punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships with a straight-set win (6-1, 6-1) over Nebraska’s Calvin Mueller in the quarterfinal round.

“I’m very happy with how I played. It was nice to play relatively close to home,” said Svajda. “We don’t normally get to compete against Big Ten players and I faced two of them. I’m eager to head to Waco for singles national championships. This week will be great for preparation.”

The California native will compete in a 64-player singles bracket of the NCAA Championships in Waco, Texas, beginning Nov. 19. Svajda qualified for last season’s NCAA Individual Championships, he fell in the second round to Arizona State’s Murphy Cassone.

The NCAA Individual Championships bracket will be released on Nov. 16.
