STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 26 Sun Devils (12-5, 2-3) strung together a valiant effort against one of the nation’s deepest lineups in No. 15 Stanford in a 4-3 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
The Sun Devils started off in a 1-0 hole after dropping the lone doubles point, and were forced to play catch-up in singles. Despite the Cardinal grabbing Courts 1, 2 and 3 to clinch the match, the back end of the starting lineup showed terrific fight.
Marianna Argyrokastriti added her team-best 15th singles win of the season by knocking off #84 Alexis Blokhina in a gritty three-set effort (2-6, 6-1, 6-3). Sedona Gallagher made quick work of Valencia Zu (6-2, 6-3) and Rachel Hanford had built a 3-0 second-set lead before her opponent retired mid-match.
After a tough two-match road trip against two of the top programs in the Pac-12, the Sun Devils have just five matches remaining in the regular season, four of which will be played at home.
Now halfway through the 10-match conference schedule this spring, the Sun Devils currently sit 2-3 in league play.
