Strong Singles Play Lifts Oregon Over Gonzaga

ASU Invite

EUGENE, Ore.  – Oregon men’s tennis put together a good team performance today at the Student Tennis Center, defeating Gonzaga 5-2.

The Ducks admittedly struggled to start the match, dropping a doubles point they thought they should’ve one. Oregon’s No.1 doubles team of Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele took care of business, but losses on courts two and three gave Gonzaga a quick 1-0 lead.

Oregon found their footing in singles play, with all six players looking good. Quick sweeps from Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele put the Ducks back in business, taking a 2-1 advantage. Ray Lo was in control on court six with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 win and Oregon was only in need of one more point on the day.

Match three was next to end. Ivailo Keremedchiev bounced back after dropping the first set with a 6-3 win in the second, but fell short 6-3 in the third and it was a 3-2 match. Jesper Klov-Nilsson put together the most exciting match of the day. He won the first set and dropped the second in a tie-break. With his opponent battling cramps, Jesper swept the final set 6-0. The final match was played out and Vlad Breazu secured the fifth point of the day with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

Quotable:
Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“Our doubles play was unacceptable today, we need to do a better job and play doubles to our level,” said Schyllander. “Proud of the grit the boys showed in singles. Not our best match, but they showed a lot of heart and weren’t going to be denied.”
