Stoiana Named CWSA Honda Award Finalist – Texas A&M Athletics

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M’s Mary Stoiana was named as a finalist for the Honda Award for women’s tennis, the Collegiate Women Sports Awards announced Friday.
 
Stoiana is one of four finalists in the running for the award, which is given to female athletes in 12 different NCAA-sanctioned sports who show excellence not only on the playing field but in the classroom and in their community.
 
This is her first time being nominated for the award following a standout year for the Aggies. On the court, Stoiana led from the front of the order in singles and tallied 21 ranked wins on the season. She finished the year with an overall record of 38-6, marking the fourth-highest single-season win total in program history. She boasted a program high No. 2 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, earning her the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Singles Tournament. Stoiana also dominated in doubles play, finishing the season with a 28-4 record playing across four different partners. She and Carson Branstine headlined the doubles rankings for A&M as they tied the program high ITA ranking in doubles at No. 2, also earning them the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Doubles Tournament. Her performances were recognized throughout the nation as she picked up a plethora of honors during the season. She was named SEC Player of the Year, All-SEC First Team, ITA All-American in singles and doubles and won SEC Player of the Week seven times which was a conference record.
 
In the classroom, she has not skipped a beat since arriving in Aggieland. The sophomore has maintained a GPA of over 3.5, earning her a place on the CSC Academic All-District Team and Academic All-America Third Team. During her time in College Station, she has made the Athletics Directors Honor Roll all four semesters and been named to the SEC Honor Roll twice.
 

Stoiana keeps the Bryan-College Station community in mind, as she participates in a multitude of community service projects. She serves as a role model for the youth of the area as she participates in ‘REVved Up to Read’, an initiative set up through Texas A&M Athletics where student-athletes visit local schools to read and interact with the young students.
