Stephenson Helps Lead Team USA To Gold In Master’U BNP Paribas Championship

REIMS, France – Washington women’s tennis head coach Robin Stephenson guided Team USA to yet another gold medal at the 2024 Master’U BNP Paribas Championship on Sunday as the United States defeated Great Britain in the gold medal match.

This gold medal was the fifth consecutive for the United States, and 12th overall, in the tournament’s 17-year history. The Americans have faced Great Britain in the last four finals of the tournament.

Stephenson’s team, which she coached alongside Andrew Rueb (Harvard men’s tennis) consisted of some of the top players in American collegiate tennis, including Savannah Broadus (Pepperdine), Sebastian Gorzny (Texas), Amelia Honer (UCSB), Mary Stoiana (Texas A&M), Gavin Young (Michigan), and Michael Zheng (Columbia).

Team USA went 3-0 at the tournament, beginning the weekend with a 6-1 win over Germany. The Americans then faced the hosts, France, defeating them 5-1 to advance to the gold medal match Sunday against Great Britain.

Great Britain had defeated Belgium in the quarterfinal and Australia in the semifinal to advance to take on the U.S. in the final match of the weekend.

“It was an honor to coach Team USA at this incredible event and bring home the gold for my second year in a row,” said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. “It was a joy to work with the players on our team – I was thoroughly impressed with their character, their team spirit, and the way they competed under pressure. We had so much fun on and off the court and this experience is truly once in a lifetime. The memories made will stick with me forever. It was also such a privilege to spend time alongside Andrew Rueb and learn from him and partner together to coach this incredible group of student-athletes.”
